The Engineering Process

An engineering process is an array of steps that engineers typically follow to solve problems. It is highly iterative and some parts of the process can be repeated multiple times in a single project. The steps can be framed and explained differently.

Research is the first step. This includes locating data about needs, identifying them and understanding the limitations. It is an essential component of the engineering design process because it helps engineers find the best solution for a given problem.

After the researchers have gathered enough data and are able to begin brainstorming solutions to the problem. This can be done in a variety of ways and is where engineering creativity really thrives. This is also a stage where potential solutions are analyzed and compared. This could involve simulation studies, generating decision matrixes, and even constructing prototypes to compare.

The process involves students deciding on the most appealing idea and creating an idea for its development. They build the prototype using the required materials and then test it against their performance standards. Students may need to retest their prototype and check it out then revise it to ensure it functions as intended.

This is a great method to teach the importance of problem-solving and iteration. It is very common for engineers to find a solution, test it and then identify another issue that they must address. The process continues until the engineer can come up with a solution which meets their expectations.
